Trojan Horse Virus – Trojan Horse Malware Explained
Learn how Trojan horse malware disguises itself as legitimate software, what it can do once installed, and how to avoid infection.
What Are Trojan Horse Viruses?
A Trojan horse is a type of malware that pretends to be legitimate software or a harmless file to trick users into installing it. The name comes from the mythological Trojan horse that hid soldiers inside a wooden gift. Similarly, Trojan malware often hides inside cracked software, fake installers, or attachments that appear benign.
Once installed, a Trojan can open a backdoor, steal data, download additional malware, or give attackers remote control of your device. Unlike worms, Trojans do not usually spread by themselves; they rely on social engineering to get onto systems.
Common Ways Trojans Are Delivered
Trojans frequently arrive as email attachments, disguised as invoices, shipping notices, or documents that require urgent attention. They also appear on download sites as "keygens," cracked versions of paid software, fake antivirus tools, or bogus system optimizers. Malicious ads and pop-ups can push Trojan installers by claiming your device is infected and offering a quick fix.
Mobile users may encounter Trojans in unofficial app stores or apps that request excessive permissions. Any software that asks for deep system access without a clear reason deserves extra scrutiny.
Preventing and Removing Trojan Infections
To avoid Trojans, download software only from trusted sources, keep your operating system and apps up to date, and treat unsolicited attachments with suspicion. Use reputable security software that can detect known Trojan families and block unsafe downloads in real time.
If you suspect a Trojan infection, disconnect from the network, run a full malware scan, and follow your security software’s removal instructions. In severe cases—especially if banking or work accounts were accessed—consider backing up essential files, wiping the device, and reinstalling from a clean source to ensure the Trojan is completely removed.
