Soft Reset vs. Factory Reset
Many routers let you change or recover passwords from within the admin interface as long as you still know the current credentials. If you are locked out completely, you may need to press and hold the physical reset button to restore factory defaults.
A full reset usually erases custom Wi‑Fi names, passwords, and port‑forwarding rules. Before you reset a device, note down any important configuration details if you still have access.
Re‑Securing Your Router After a Reset
After the router reboots, connect via Ethernet or Wi‑Fi using the default network name and password printed on the label. Log into the admin page with the factory credentials and immediately set a new strong password.
Recreate your Wi‑Fi network with modern encryption (WPA2‑PSK or WPA3‑Personal where supported) and disable remote administration features you do not need. If your ISP supplied the router, update them with any new Wi‑Fi details used by set‑top boxes or mesh extenders.
